Winter Weight Gain

This morning I read an article while on the stationary bike out of Triathlete Magazine.  It gave three tips for better eating this time of year:

1) Manage calories

  • training is usually lower so we don’t need to eat as much
  • hide any energy bars, gels, or drinks that are high in carbs

2) Redistribute calories

  • focus on eating more protein, healthy fats
  • eat more fruits and veggies
  • eat 5 small meals throughout the day not 3 huge ones

3) Know the environment

  • cold weather usually signals  emotional change – known as SAD “seasonal affective disorder”
  • combination of colder weather and shorter days can lead us to eating more comfort foods such as: creamy soups, sweets, and richer more condensed foods

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.  Talent will not….genius will not….. education will not…. persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”  Calvin Coolidge
